Our pup is really timid by nature. We should have known when we visited the breeder and met the puppies in the litter. Fecky was very evidently the timid one – her limbs would become tense and her eyes focussed on the ground whenever picked up. Her siblings on the other hand did not display such behaviour. Such is the power of genetics and Mother Nature.
And so we picked this puppy that was by nature predisposed to being afraid of many things. Some things she has been afraid of include: spray bottles, humans in long, flowy dresses, showers.
It is a lot of hard work socialising and training a timid puppy. Online resources teaching you how to pick a puppy would tell you not to pick a puppy like Fecky. Nonetheless fate and human choices have brought us together, and we have to make things work.
An important part of socialising and counter-conditioning of scary experiences has been the power of yummy treats. Thankfully, Fecky has been very receptive to treats that are yummy enough to make her forget about whatever is bothering her, even if for a split second and just enough for us to mark and reward.
